McDonald’s Sweden debut Happy Meals for seniors amid pandemic – 9Honey

Kids can’t have all the fun.
McDonald’s in Sweden have just launched an adult take on the iconic Happy Meal, with a sweet twist.
With social isolation for senior citizens already an issue in Sweden, even before the pandemic, the fast food chain thought they’d address it in an adorable way, with the launch of their Happy Meal Senior.
Older customers are amongst the most vulnerable in the pandemic, so to save them a trip to the restaurant, the Happy Meal Senior requires kids to buy their grandparents or elderly family friends their favourite McDonald’s meal for home delivery, in a classic role reversal.

Seniors gets something better than a toy a hand-drawn picture from their grandkids. (McDonald’s / Nord DDB)
Instead of a toy, they’re gifted something much more valuable a hand-drawn picture from the littlies (nawww!).
The ad demonstrates how it works, with kids invited into a drawing cubby, where they can sanitise their hands before creating their masterpiece.

They then hand over the finished work of art to a staff member behind the counter to pack away for delivery.
The adorable initiative was dreamt up by marketing agency Nord DDB, who have run a number of family-focused campaigns for the brand.
Sofie Lager, senior marketing manager at McDonald’s Sweden, said they wanted to let the kids surprise their grandparents with what they love most, “along with a surprise that we know the grandparents appreciate”.

“We hope the initiative has made the lives of the grandparents a little more enjoyable.”
Restaurants are continually finding new ways to adapt and create new business amid the pandemic, with McDonald’s Netherlands even trialling a new coronavirus-proof prototype restaurant design as back in May 2020.
The prototype features include clear social distancing markings, designated waiting spots, table service and meal trolleys, but there’s been no news yet on whether the updates will be rolled out at other restaurants in the Netherlands or beyond.
9Honey have contacted McDonald’s to see if the Happy Meal Senior will be launching in Australia.
